Ice Maidens are creatures of legend: beautiful women of the snow who are said to be as cold and distant as the element they represent. The truth isn't far from the story: Yukina is one of those Maidens (also known as a Koorime), a particular race of youkai who inhabit a snowy island that floats high above Makai (the demon world). The society is all female and avoid all outside contact and interaction out of fear that will lead to the destruction of their pristine world. But one Koorime disobeyed the laws, falling in love and mating with a fire youkai, which led to the birth of twins. The girl, Yukina, was allowed to remain... but her brother, Hiei, was ordered to be thrown off the island only minutes after his birth, having been branded as a "Forbidden Child" and one who would destroy them all if he was granted life. Despite his mother's tearful and frantic pleadings, the act was carried out by her best friend. Shortly after this was accomplished, Hina killed herself out of grief and left Yukina to be raised by Rui, her friend.

When she grew older, Rui finally told Yukina the whole story, also mentioning that she believed her brother was still alive. After hearing this, Yukina disappeared from the Land of the Glaciers to look for a twin she had never met, carrying a necklace consisting of a tear her mother had cried at the time of her birth. Her brother would have the other one.

Sadly, things did not go as planned and Yukina was captured by a human crime lord, who took her to the human world, enclosed her in a room sealed with cursed tags that hindered any escape attempts, and tortured her in order to obtain her tears. Like all other Koorime, Yukina's tears transformed into priceless, pearl-like gems known as hiruiseki. The torture and imprisonment dragged on for five long years, until two humans forming the Reikai Tantei (Urameshi Yuusuke and Kuwabara Kazuma) came to rescue her-- and succeeded. At the time, Yukina also met the brother she had been searching for when he prevented her captor from running away with her. Unfortunately, Hiei didn't reveal who he was, even though he knew full well she was his sister and Yukina was finally able to return home.

But Yukina was bound and determined not to give up that easily and returned a few months later during a tournament that her new friends had been dragged into. She offered her newly improved skills as a healer and also explained that the other Koorime had given her permission to stay in the human world for awhile in order to find her brother (which was a lie, as she had once again left on her own). She remained with the others for the duration of the tournament, healing injuries and cheering on their team from the audience. She was pulled from just after the tournament ended and brought to the island.

~ UNDER The Sky Of Whatever Color ~

ABILITIES: Lowering the temperature to freeze anything in the vicinity, thus creating a highly effective barrier for anyone not of a powerful youkai nature, healing, producing hiruiseki through her tears, minor telepathy
THE GIRL BEHIND THE SMILE~: As icy as she might seem, Yukina is actually far from it in personality. She's a very sweet and affectionate girl who loves animals (especially birds) and who is easily awed and appreciative of the simple things life has to offer, such as sunsets and the sound of the ocean. She is HIGHLY innocent in several areas, including the nuances of humans and their customs, as well as the more romantic connotation of the word "love", but she's also very mature and serious in other situations. Yukina fully understands pain and can't stand to see people hurt each other or take another's life. This compels her to defend others whenever she can, even if she's not much of a fighter, and use her healing abilities as much as possible to help out where she can.

Underneath all that warmth and sweetness lies a strong determination. Yukina refuses to be like the other Ice Maidens, preferring to die rather than to freeze her heart. She won't give up hope that her brother is dead and continues to search for him, believing that he is out there somehow (and she may actually know that Hiei is her brother, but she seems to be waiting for him to confirm it).
